Marketplace & Gift Shop

The Urugo Marketplace offers a wide range of handicrafts at affordable prices.

The Urugo Women’s Opportunity Center maintains market stalls, creative spaces and food production facilities to enable women to produce and sell handmade and traditional crafts and food products, earning income to support their families. Rwandan handicrafts are unique and based on traditional art forms that date back centuries.

At the Marketplace and gift shop you will find baskets, beaded jewelry, hand-carved wooden items, traditional Imigongo paintings, clothing, fabrics and décor handmade by our vocational training participants.

Artisans in Residence

Visit the creative “pods” built from clay bricks made by a local women’s cooperative and designed in the round, because Rwandan women prefer to work together in a circle. Watch as talented artisans weave baskets and create traditional Imigongo paintings. Learn the meanings of traditional designs and craft forms.

Women bring in milk, which will be made into organic yoghurt in our farm kitchen.

Farm-fresh yoghurt, peanut butter and cheese

You can also see women making organic yogurt, cheese, and peanut butter in the center’s farm kitchen. The food production facility supplies yoghurt and peanut butter to commercial establishments including hotels, restaurants and shops in the eastern province and  in Kigali.  Tour the operation and learn how our food production facility is supporting women’s economic empowerment, and enjoy tasty samples!
